Fourteen years ago I flew across the Atlantic to join a NASDAQ-listed American company — one of the most valuable in the country at the time — as a junior salesperson. I landed, got briefed, put on the shirt and tie, and was told the same thing every new hire gets told.

What I noticed almost immediately was that the seniors around me were coasting. Going through the motions. Finishing their hours. The energy in the room was flat. And I did not fully understand the product yet, I did not fully understand the market yet — but I understood one thing clearly: energy matters more than tenure.

Slowly at first. Then steadily. I started paying attention to which products carried the biggest commission and built upsell lines around them. Three months in, the sales manager pulled me aside and asked me to run a mini training for the team on how I was finding the upsells. The person who was told it would never work was now teaching the people who said it.
